The teams started on a cautious note, as a result there were few attempts at either goal. As the match progressed, Margao had a chance to surge ahead but Mansuh Oliveira blasted wide from close off a through pass from Mario Fernandes. Margao nearly took the lead but striker Gammy Costa’s header missed the target narrowly off a pass from Vijay Rego.
The Flaming Oranje took the field with two foreigners – Nigerian Obiora Anoure and Japanese striker Seiya Sugishita and a couple of I-League players. They enjoyed better ball possession but hardly troubled the rival defence in the initial period of the game.
Later, the Flaming Oranje were in full spate with four back-to-back attacks. Sporting Clube looked to score through Japanese Seiya Sugishita close ranger but Margao goalkeeper Bruno Colaco’s fine work denied the Flaming Oranje a goal.
Crossing over, Sporting Clube tried to push forward and surged ahead in the 58th minute when Nigerian Obiora Anoure sent a through pass to striker Vitorino Fernandes on the right flank, who showed fine skill and alertness to flick the ball over Bruno, who unnecessarily came out of his area.
Stung by the setback, Margao regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp. They raided the rival citadel and had a chance to restore parity when Manush Oliveira floated the ball inside the rival goal but striker Gammy failed to beat the rival goalkeeper.
Midway in the second half, Sporting nearly doubled the lead but striker Vitorino’s feeble shot went straight into the safe hands of Bruno in the 79th minute.
Sporting Clube were unlucky when rival defender Benzu Clemente effected a goal line save to deny Vitorino’s attempt off Joseph Pereira.
Margao went all-out in the dying minutes but the rival defenders stood tall in protecting the slender lead.
With this win, Sporting Clube have clinched the fifth spot in the standings with nine points from seven matches while Margao remained on eight points from eight matches.
