Sesa Football Academy qualified for Federation Cup proper squeezing past Sporting Clube de Goa 7-6 via the tie-breaker after the teams fought out a 2-2 draw at full time at Tilak Maidan, here on Friday. Extra time was of no avail.
Shishuram Chutia put Sesa into the lead in the 5th and Mathew Gonsalves equalised in the 25th. Emmanuel snatched the lead for Sporting in the 69th minute but a minute later Inacio Colaco equalised for Sesa
Lesley Fernandes, Vivek Kaira, Pratesh Shirodkar, Inacio Colaco, Don Bosco Andrew converted for Sesa in the penalty shoot-out. Agnelo Colaco, Adil Khan, Freiman Peixoto, Emmanuel converted for Sporting. Joseph Pereira missed for Sporting as his drived was saved by Sesa goalkeeper
It was a mouth-watering affair with attacks, counters-attacks, goals, misses, saves from both sides in both sessions.
Sesa had the final laugh to ensure that they would be in Federation Cup proper to lock horns with I-League teams – Chirag United, Churchill Brothers and Viva Kerala in Group ‘B’ in Goa.
Sesa had made their plans open scoring in the 5th when Ivo Fernandes backpassed to Shishuram off a free kick from Pritesh Shirodker and Shishuram struck it perfectly.
Exactly 20 minutes later, after some soul searching, Sporting bounced back and scored the equaliser when skipper Joseph Pereira served a cross to Mathew Gonsalves, who headed the ball in.
Sporting were the first to take the lead in the second half in 69th minute, when Sesa defender cleared the ball from the box but unfortunately it deflected off their own player and reached striker Emmanuel Akwuegbu, who placed it over goalkeeper Bruno Colaco.
Sesa equalised in the very next minute off Inacio Colaco who scored with 30-yard shot.
Coach Clifford Chukwuma substituted goalkeeper Bruno Colaco with Shayan Roy and the tactic paid off as he effected a smart save.
Sporting’s Felix D’Souza failed to stop a single shot in the penalty shoot out.
