Joalan stars in Sporting’s big win against Salgaocar
April 18, 2012
MAPUSA: A brace from Joalan Fernandes ensured Sporting Clube de Goa picked up all three points after demolishing Salgaocar 7-0 in AIFF’s I-League U-20 football encounter at Poriat ground, Calangute, Tuesday. Sporting led 2-0 at the break.

The first was in Taca Goa semi-finals where Sporting won 2-0. The sequel in the Sesa Cup was a much closer encounter with Sporting winning on penalties after they fought their way back in injury time to draw 2-2 at full time.
Two goalkeeping errors gave Sporting a 2-0 cushion at the interval.
After the change of ends, Salgaocar looked demoralised, allowing Sporting to take full advantage.
Midfielder Rowlin Borges was the catalyst for Sporting, spraying the ball to both wings and straight down the middle, for the likes of Nickson Castanha, Alber Gonsalves, Pritam Ningthoujam and Joalan to run riot.
It took just three minutes for Sporting to race into the lead when defender Mohammed Ali shot at the goal, but it was parried to an unusually far distance by the goalkeeper, allowing the alert Joalan to place home.
On the stroke of half time, Mohammed struck a free kick from 40 yards out, which bounced over the goalkeeper and entered the net.
Seven minutes into the second session, Nickson swept in a useful cross from the right side which Joalan collected and eased past the substitute Salgaocar goalkeeper who had only made his entrance at the breather.
Ten minutes later, Rowlin guided the ball towards the right, where Nickson used his pace to burst forward and score the fourth.
Sporting’s fifth goal was a well executed combination play, which had Salgaocar reeling. Clayton passed to Rowlin, who played a defence splitting pass to Joalan and he laid the ball off for substitute Xavier Dias who drilled it into the top corner in the 78th minute.
Two minutes later, yet another measured pass from Rowlin exposed Salgaocar’s defensive frailties which allowed Pritam to maraud forward and finish cleanly.
Two minutes from the end Pritam played a short corner to Xavier who powered the ball across the face of the goal with a stinging whack, which defender Charles Cardozo directed into the back of the net with a firm header.
After round one, Sporting and Dempo have three points each in the kitty while Salgaocar and Churchill Bros are yet to open their accounts.
India coach Savio Medeira was present and had a look at the next crop of potential stars.
