Vijay Mallya gets candid at Think Fest

Says his hubris caused Kingfisher Airline downfall
PANJIM: The three day Think Fest 2013, organized by Tehelka magazine concluded on Sunday in Goa. The final day of the festival saw versatile actors like Robert De Niro and Priyanka Chopra and business tycoon Vijay Mallya among others sharing their views and ideas with the audience.
Vijay Mallya was frank about his business ventures and accepted questions on Kingfisher Airline: “Indians are extremely aspiring and when they are successful, they want to flaunt it. Brands should be built on lifestyle and we consciously chose fashion and music. At 26, I was
the chairman of United Breweries and as a youngster I wanted to roam in a Ferrari, wear designer clothes and watches. I lived up my age and I was called flamboyant.”
“Kingfisher Airline was the only airline that connected so well in the history of aviation in the country, unfortunately, the government refused to help. I can possibly see the return of Kingfisher Airline but there is an inherent risk of speaking early,” he added.
Speaking about the hard work that goes into researching the characters he plays, Robert De Niro said, “You have to get into their lives, you can never be them but you can be close to them. You have to research about their profession and many people are open as they know (that they would be) immortalized in the film. They speak about how they do it and how they really do it.” He further added, “Indian people are nice and I have come back after 35 years. I decided to visit long back but then decades pass by and you don’t realize it.”
To conclude the Think Fest, Priyanka Chopra enlightened the audience about taking on the role of Mary Kom for her biopic: “It is not a docu-drama but a story of a girl who rises beyond her limitations. It is about every girl out there who wants to dream and break away from the mould. Mary Kom was a five time world champion in boxing and no one knew about that, it shocked me and this will be the first biopic on a female sportsperson in this country who is a little older than me but a breathing and living icon.”
Mary Kom was excited to have Priyanka play her role, “My first dream was an Olympic medal and the second was a movie on me. I was excited when I won the Olympics and now superstar Priyanka is taking my role. I am short tempered and I control it, but in the ring, I never control it,” she said.
